Sanganeri print is one of Rajasthan’s most loved textile traditions. If you’ve noticed the delicate floral patterns on our bags, you’ve already seen it. At Navo Juno Lifestyle, many of our prints draw on this craft. In this post, we explain what Sanganeri print is, where it comes from and why it takes so long to make.
What Is Sanganeri Print?
Sanganeri print takes its name from Sanganer, a historic textile town near Jaipur. People know it for fine floral motifs, graceful vines, intricate butis and nature-inspired artwork. These designs have shaped Rajasthan’s textile heritage for centuries. Today, they remain popular across India and around the world.
What Makes a Print Sanganeri?
Surprisingly, the printing method doesn’t define a Sanganeri print. The design language does. Look for these features:
- Delicate flowers
- Trailing vines
- Paisleys
- Detailed botanical motifs
- Elegant repeating patterns
Together, these timeless designs give Sanganeri textiles their distinctive identity.
Why Traditional Sanganeri Block Printing Takes So Long
Traditionally, artisans create Sanganeri print with hand-carved wooden blocks. Every step takes patience:
- A carver cuts the design into a wooden block by hand. Fine details take time.
- The printer dips the block in dye and presses it onto the fabric.
- Next, the printer lines up the block again and repeats the stamp along the whole length of cloth.
- Multi-colour designs need a separate block for each colour, so the printer repeats the process for every shade.
- Finally, the fabric needs time to dry and set.
Because the printer places every stamp by hand, one length of fabric takes far longer than a machine print. However, that patience gives the cloth its handmade character.
Block Printing vs Screen Printing in Sanganer
Many modern workshops in Jaipur and Sanganer now use screen printing, also called table printing. This method reproduces the same detailed patterns with more consistency and speed. As a result, the artwork keeps its signature look, and it suits everyday products and larger-scale production better. Both methods keep the Sanganeri design language alive.
